Hi, I'm Teacher Mel!

"I want learners to appreciate the doors that English fluency will open for them."

I'm a Cambridge-certified English language instructor, with a background in communications and global journalism. I spent seven years working at an international news organisation, which makes for fun stories for my students!

I've taught English in the Singapore local school system for more than ten years. Besides that, I have also taught English as a second language to adults and children, online and offline! When Covid-19 took us by surprise, I was able to shift classes online immediately and seamlessly thanks to my past online teaching experience!

Why I teach

Have you ever taught someone how to read from scratch? I have had the honour to teach five such children. It is amazing how the basics of ABCs take a child from Primary One to University. My very first batch of primary school students graduated from University in 2019 and I am amazed at how the tools of the language will continue to take these once-children, now-adults through life beyond their school years.

"You make me feel that life is easy" said a card I received from a student a few years ago.

"What do you mean?" I asked, not expecting much.

She said, "Do you remember when we first met? Our first class? I could not read anything. You taught me ABC and days of the week and months of the year. I felt that English was impossible. But after you showed me everything about English, I think... life is easy. I can do anything!"

It isn't about the grades, in the end. It's how you make people feel. As the little girl told me this, in the language I had taught her, I knew that this was the right career for me.

This is why I continue to teach. Language is a lifelong journey. It shouldn't be a pain, it should be a joy to connect to the world through a shared language.
